New York taxi driver Bill Cannon was driving along the Van Wyck Expressway in Queens when he saw a kitten on the road.
The ginger furball rushed about under the wheels of passing cars, and only by some miracle was still alive.
“I drove by slowly enough to hear him meow in fear,” Bill later said in an interview on WCBS 880 radio, “I could not stand it and stopped the car. When I reached out to grab him, he almost jumped in fright under another car, but I managed to grab him.”
Then the man called his wife and said that he was taking home a “surprise”.
“Darling, you will either hate me or love me more,” he joked, although he really did not know how his wife would react.
But all his doubts were quickly dispelled.
There was such a warm welcome for the kitten at home, that Bill definitely decided to keep him for good.
The kitten was given the name Autumn. And the next day he was taken to the vet.
He examined the baby and said that, apart from a slightly bruised nose and a slight limp, everything was fine with him.
