British actor Anthony Head, best known for his roles in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Ted Lasso, and Merlin, has died at the age of 72. His death came only months after the loss of his longtime partner, Sarah Fisher, who was the mother of his two daughters, actresses Emily Head and Daisy Head.
Head’s daughters confirmed that he died peacefully after complications from pneumonia. In their tribute, Emily and Daisy described their father as an extraordinary man and said it had been a privilege to witness the impact he and his work had on so many people. They also asked for privacy during an extremely difficult period for their family.
For many viewers, Head will always be remembered as Rupert Giles, the calm, intelligent, and deeply loyal Watcher in Buffy the Vampire Slayer. The series ran from 1997 to 2003 and made him internationally recognizable. He stepped away as a main cast member during the sixth season but returned several times as a guest star before the show ended.

Before Buffy, Head first became widely known in the United Kingdom through the famous Nescafé Gold Blend television adverts. Those commercials helped introduce him to a broad audience and became an important early chapter in his screen career.
His career later expanded across television, film, stage, and music. He played King Uther Pendragon in the BBC fantasy series Merlin, appeared in the sketch comedy Little Britain, and took on the role of Rupert Mannion, the former AFC Richmond owner and Rebecca Welton’s ex-husband, in Ted Lasso.

In their statement, Emily and Daisy said their father loved his profession and felt fortunate to have worked with so many talented people across a career that lasted several decades. They said his legacy would continue through the shows he helped bring to life and through the audiences who still love them.
Head’s death followed the death of Sarah Fisher, his longtime partner, only around six months earlier. Fisher was 61. At the time, Emily and Daisy described the loss of their mother as sudden and deeply shocking, saying her absence had left an enormous space in their lives.
Fisher was known for her dedication to animal welfare. She ran Tilley Farm, a sanctuary for rescued horses, ponies, and donkeys, and was also associated for many years with Holly Hedge Animal Sanctuary in the UK.
Both of Head’s daughters followed him into acting. Emily Head played Carli D’Amato in The Inbetweeners and later appeared as Rebecca White in Emmerdale and Colette Andrews in The Syndicate. Daisy Head also appeared in The Syndicate and starred in Netflix’s Shadow and Bone.
Show business was deeply rooted in Head’s family. His brother Murray Head is also an actor and singer, while their father, Seafield Laurence Stewart Murray Head, was a documentary filmmaker. Their mother, Helen Shingler, was an actress who died in 2019.
Head leaves behind a body of work that spans generations of viewers, from the cult following of Buffy the Vampire Slayer to the global popularity of Ted Lasso. For fans, colleagues, and family, his performances remain a lasting reminder of the craft he loved.
