Recently, on a blistering 98-degree day, a staff member from Stray Rescue of St. Louis was out walking a rescue pup when they noticed a strange object baking on the sidewalk.

A crate sat out in the open with a black tarp draped overtop.
The staff member’s heart began racing.

“[They] radioed on their walkie talkie,” a representative from Stray Rescue of St. Louis told The Dodo. “They felt a little panicked because it was so hot outside.”
A team member named Rosie ran over to help.
“When she lifted the tarp, [Rosie] saw not one, but two adorable full-grown adults, who acted so grateful to be found!” the representative said. “They were panting heavily and needed to get inside right away.”

Rescuers took the dogs to the clinic, where they weighed them, vaccinated them and gave them plenty of water. The shelter didn’t have much room left, so team members took pictures of the pups and posted them to the shelter’s foster page, asking if anyone could house the sweet strays.
The dogs — later named Punky Brewster and Arnold Jackson — were about 3 years old and likely siblings. Arnold quickly found a foster home. Meanwhile, Punky stayed with her friends at the shelter, patiently waiting to meet her forever family.

In time, Punky and Arnold both connected with loving, permanent families. Today, the pups are cozy with their new parents, enjoying all the comforts of home.
“These dogs are going to have wonderful futures!” the representative said. “They are both so sweet.”
