A mother dog, discovered strikingly painted as a leopard, is battling for survival with her nine helpless puppies. 💔🐾
Arizona’s scorching heat is infamous, a fact seemingly lost on one dog owner, but thankfully not on the Arizona Humane Society. On May 29th, a neighbor’s alarming call about a dog suffering in 99-degree heat set this distressing tale in motion. The dog was tied with a short rope, left without water or shade. An AHS investigator arrived to find the dog chained to a metal fence, struggling to stand on a small patch of dirt to escape the burning pavement. Clearly a nursing mother, the situation was made even more bizarre by the bright leopard-print spots painted on her body.
Despite her ordeal, the mama dog, as Ruthie Jesus noted, remained remarkably sweet. Upon arrival, investigators provided water and a towel for the 133-degree pavement, which the dog eagerly accepted. The owner, located by police, admitted to finding her a month prior as a stray. When questioned about puppies, the owner led the team inside to find nine three-week-old pups separated from their mother.
The owner then surrendered the dogs, realizing they couldn’t provide adequate care. Rainbow Brite, as she was named, and her Sprites are now safe under AHS care. At the Lazin Animal Foundation Trauma Hospital, Rainbow Brite received treatment and is expected to recover and continue nursing. The leopard spots, deemed purely cosmetic, will fade over time.
Rainbow Brite’s case highlights a broader issue: a misunderstanding of canine welfare. A viral TikTok trend showcases owners dyeing their dogs’ fur in unnatural colors, attempting to transform them into something they’re not. While some find it “cute,” a veterinarian warns of potential dangers.
Thankfully, Rainbow Brite and her puppies were rescued and are now thriving in a foster home until the pups are old enough. This rescue was made possible by a compassionate individual who chose to intervene.
