Construction workers at a building site in Queanbeyan, Australia, were met with quite a surprise recently when they arrived at work to find someone huge trapped in a crevice.
Peeking in to get a better look, the team realized the trapped animal was a kangaroo, and he needed help.
“The kangaroo was stuck in a trench behind a retaining wall and had several injuries, making the rescue complex and dangerous,” Wildcare Queanbeyan wrote in a press release.
Four representatives from Wildcare Queanbeyan soon arrived at the scene, eager to get the ‘roo to safety. After a veterinarian administered a sedative to help the kangaroo sleep, rescuers carefully moved the animal out of the trench and onto steady ground.
The team named the kangaroo Dusty and took him to Possumwood Wildlife for further care.
“Dusty is now in recovery and is being closely monitored to ensure he heals properly,” Wildcare Queanbeyan wrote. “He will receive additional fluids and ongoing care, with the hope that he will make a full recovery and, eventually, be released back into his native habitat.”
Animal advocates are so glad that the kangaroo is enjoying a safe recovery, and they’re grateful to the Good Samaritans who ensured his speedy rescue.
“This rescue was a great example of teamwork and quick action. We’re incredibly thankful to the quick-thinking members of the public who called us to attend to the situation and to our volunteer members for ensuring Dusty’s safety,” Wildcare Queanbeyan wrote. “Rescues like this remind us of the challenges wildlife face in urban environments and why it’s so important to have dedicated people ready to help.”
