Rescued Dog Finds Forever Home and Instagram Fame with NYPD Officer

On a cold, rainy day, NYPD Officer Michael Pascale spotted a small black dog in distress while patrolling a park. The dog, later named Joey, was tied to a fence with a heavy chain. Surrounded by discarded needles and broken beer bottles, Joey was soaked and shivering, clearly abandoned.

Reflecting on the encounter, Pascale told “He’s just looking up at me with these ‘Help Me’ eyes. I knew I had to get him out of there.”

With compassion, Officer Pascale took Joey to the Animal Care Centers of NYC shelter in Brooklyn. While drying off the grateful pup with a towel, Pascale felt a special bond forming between them. “I don’t see an animal,” Pascale said. “I see a soul. And that’s not something I walk away from.”

Officer Pascale wasted no time in snapping a quick photo of Joey and sending it to his wife. The moment she saw the image, her heart melted, and she instantly insisted that he bring the adorable dog home. However, before they could welcome Joey into their family, there was still one small obstacle they needed to overcome.

The animal shelter informed Pascale that Joey needed to stay for a mandatory 72-hour stray hold. This period is essential to allow any potential owners, who might be searching for a lost pet, the chance to claim their animal.

Despite the unexpected delay, Officer Pascale made a heartfelt promise that he would come back for Joey—and he stayed true to his word. Every single day during the mandatory hold period, he visited the shelter, spending time with the gentle dog. With each visit, their bond grew stronger, as Joey began to recognize the familiar face and respond with increasing affection. What began as a chance encounter was quickly turning into a meaningful connection neither of them could ignore.

Once the waiting period ended, Pascale was finally able to adopt Joey. Filled with excitement and relief, Pascale promised Joey, now safe and happy, that he would always be protected from harm. Together, they returned home to start their new life.

Today, Joey is a beloved member of the family. No longer a frightened stray, he finds joy exploring New York with Pascale and cuddling with his wife on the couch. Officer Pascale fondly jokes that Joey has become a real Mama’s Boy.

Though Joey has a few quirks, such as rooting through the garbage or avoiding the rain, he is a cherished companion. His cheerful demeanor even has its own spotlight on Instagram. Above all, Joey is loved, which is what every dog truly desires.
